The sacrament of Baptism is the foundation of Christian faith, marking the beginning of a lifelong journey with God. It is a transformative event that cleanses us from original sin, welcomes us into the Church, and infuses us with the Holy Spirit.

Through the Sacrament of Baptism, we become members of the Body of Christ, the Church. We are united to Jesus and to one another, forming a spiritual community that is called to love God and our neighbor. Baptism also bestows upon us the gifts of the Holy Spirit, empowering us to live as faithful disciples of Christ and to bear witness to His love in the world.

Last August 29, 2024, Saint Joseph College celebrates the Baptismal Anniversary of its former president, Most Reverend Bishop Precioso Cantillas, SDB DD with the first of four annual “Family Day Celebrations.” The theme, “Taking the word and listening to the Father attentively,” invited attendees to reflect on the profound significance of the sacrament of Baptism in their lives.

In his homily during the Thanksgiving Mass, Rev. Msgr. Oscar A. Cadayona, the current school president, emphasized that Baptism is more than just a religious ritual. It’s a transformative event that marks the beginning of a lifelong spiritual journey. As infants, we were welcomed into the Holy Church, cleansed of original sin, and embraced as beloved children of God.

By being baptized, “we inflame the gift of faith, the gift of baptism that we receive from the Lord”. This emphasizes that more than bringing our identity as Christians, we need to nurture and deepen our understanding of it, by living a life of prayer.

This sacrament initiated a covenant between us and Christ, a commitment to live according to His teachings and to be beacons of His love in the world. As Baptized Christians, we are called to nurture our faith through prayer and contemplation, deepening our understanding of God’s Word and His plan for our lives.

For us Josephinians and children of God, Baptism is far more than just a single event; it is a lifelong call to live out the promises made on that holy day. It is essential to celebrate our baptismal anniversary, for it reminds us of our Christian identity and mission. Baptism is the cornerstone of our spiritual life, urging us to walk in the light of Christ and to be a beacon of His love to others.
