A fusion of skills, talents, and enthusiasm blared through the Saint Joseph College – Mambajao Campus on September 27, 2024 as the College of Computer Studies (CCS), College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA), and the XY Club, culminated the Science and Math Month together for the first time, in an event called STEM Fusion, with the theme, “Developing the Future Innovators: Integrating Responsibility, Unity, and Wisdom into the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics”.
The event started off in the afternoon where the blazing hot sun ignited the spirits of the students as the games and competitions began. The first of the said competitions is the Damath where the representatives of the three departments showed off their calculated and strategic moves not just to eliminate the chips of their opponents but also to obtain a score higher than theirs. It was a battle of wits, one could not determine the winner until the game was actually over.
Happening simultaneously to that, just a few rooms down the corridor is the Poster Making Competition. This one lets the participants express Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in an artistic way as they fill their illustration boards with figures and colors, creating a masterpiece relevant to the theme of the event.
And then there’s also the Bridge Building Competition which is done in teams, where each team is composed of a CCS, CEA, and XY member, fostering unity among the three departments. The united efforts of each member led them to design and build a miniature bridge out of sticks and ties whose strength was later on tested in front of the crowd who cheered in amazement and support for the teams.
On the open field, under the shade of the tents, the Math-O was also conducted. In this game, the students’ arithmetic skills were tested in a fun and enjoyable manner. Paired with luck, some students were able to form the required patterns after they solved a series of simple equations. Alongside that was the Rubik’s Cube challenge which was beat in only 15 seconds. Adding to the fun experience was the sack race that boosted up the energy of the students.
When evening came upon, the most awaited part commenced, the Sientist/Mathematician/Inventor Look Alike. During this time, everyone gathered in the field to witness the representatives of each department as they honored the great minds behind everything we know and have today, by bringing them back to life and introducing their contributions to the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
Needless to say, the students had a blast. It was truly a memorable first time coordination of the future Scientists, Inventors, Programmers, Engineers, and Mathematicians of Saint Joseph College. One that lives up to the name that it was given, STEM Fusion.
